Funkscribe - Funkiest New Artist

Monday, February 18th, 2008

This guy funkscribe is the funkiest new musician I’ve seen. Now I’m not a regular scout for upcoming music, but I somehow came across him on youtube. I was amazed at what I heard. I haven’t yet found out how to get any more of his music but all the same I thought I’d pass this link along to anyone else that enjoys some good funk. You can also get in touch with him via myspace here.

No need for light at the end of the tunnel when there’s blue, green, and
orange light in the middle!

Doctor Zhivago

Wednesday, January 18th, 2006

I have been reading Doct56003238_2a056a496a.jpgor Zhivago by Boris Pasternak over the past two weeks. It is an amazing novel. I won’t spoil the story, but I’ll say that it is the tale of Yuri Zhivago from his boyhood to his elderly years.

The story starts around 1903 and continues through the periods of upheaval during Russia’s revolutions. It’s the story of family, friends, and the changes in their lives during extradinary times of change and uncertainty.
I’ve never read a book that spanned such a long period of time. Like the Dostoyevsky novels that I’ve read, Doctor Zhivago has 2 - 3 dozen characters. Each of these characters has a rich background and is well developed. The characters each have their own well described lives which intertwine and interrelate. The story starts and many points, from many angles. Each of these angles is like a peice of string that Pasternak has woven together in unpredictable ways.

74434366_e4e8723db4.jpgThe events of the story are more moving and interesting because they involve characters which have weathered over the years, and fermented through hundreds of pages. Sometimes they reappear suddenly in unexpected circumstances, not unlike the amazing coincidences of our own lives. The element of impossibility is captured in a believable almost romantic way.

That would be a kind of pessimistic way to look at it.

I can’t see to the end of the tunnel, but at least there’s some interesting art on the walls beside me!

No! no drumming! no! no! no!

Saturday 26th August 2006:

I originally posted this entry when I was living in a Syracuse apartment during graduate school.  At the time I was an avid drummer, and loved to jam on my Djembe with various musician friends.  We would make music throughout the night, and the law students in the other apartment didn’t take too kindly to the noise.  Arguing with them via my landlord was a pretty awful and stressful situation.  It really affected my spirit for drumming, and I posted this message as part of the venting process.

Somehow I think poetry like that would go along with this photo. It’s great! I really like the way that she looks open. Postures have so much meaning. When I see this I think of embrace.

Is the ball still going up? falling down? exactly at the apex? What do you think? Do you think too much?

This shot has almost a mirror effect. There is a dividing line between the ground which is tan and the trees which are black, and then a little bit of pink in both. It gives me a feeling of hope.
