Entreprenuerial pursuits

Tuesday, August 22nd, 2006

I’ve decided that I want to add some pages on my website that will act
as a virtual resume. I’ll put up a list of services I can offer to
people looking for a technology consultant, book reiviewer, amatuer
market commentator, free lance programmer, or whatever. I think that
there are a world of possibilities out there, and I’d like to make
myself available to global networking.
The inspiration for this comes from “The World Is Flat.” From this book
I’ve been encouraged that perhaps it is possible for me to network with
people around the globe. Afterall, I do have my corporation,
Masterminds Unlimited. So far I’ve kept Masterminds pretty well under
wraps but I think the time is right to bring it more into the light.

Conflict of interest

Tuesday, August 8th, 2006

Today I am met with a conflict of interest. I recently subscribed to
the financial forecast and elliot wave theorist from Robert Pretcher’s
team at elliotwave.com. These publications include a stipulation with
the download saying they if you re-transmit or even allow someone else
to view the subscription issues, you or your firm will be held
financially responsible for the extra subscription fees.
Now, I’m not going to violate this stipulation because I’m sure that the
company could and would sue me. Not to mention that it would be
unethical to repost someone else’s work without obtaining their
permission, or worse, after they explicitly prohibitted redistribution.
I think that this letter was written with the intnet that a large and
financially able trading or investment firm not purchase a single
subcription for 50 traders. It sounds pretty harsh for the individual
investor. I can’t even show the subscription to my father? Or I owe
you 60$? I understand that the expertise in the forecast is expansive
and hard to come by, but does this jibe with the rules of fair use and
copyright? I’m not sure.
Anyway, I was previously thinking of becoming an elliot wave forecaster
myself. I posted a couple entries with my own elliot wave
interpretations that I drew after reading Pretcher’s book. Granted, they
were probably not correct lablling, but I was thinking of becoming a
wave theorist someday. If I read Pretcher’s newsletters though, how can
I still come up with my own? They would all be influenced by his
previous wave counts. So maybe the wave theorist idea is out the
window for now.

Ugly Tomatoes

Ugly Tomatoes? What? What’s going on here. “Ugly” can’t be a kind of
tomato. So is Stop & Shop telling me that the have unappealing
produce? I don’t get it. Have you ever seen tomatoes labelled this
way?

Entreprenuership

Monday, January 16th, 2006

I’m at it again. I just love being an entreprenuer. Now, I’m definitely notThe Cash Man wheeling and dealing for a million dollar buy out, but I am hoping to put something together that can be profitable. More of a lifestyle business. It seems that web design and maintenance is so easy these days. BlueHost.com makes it so easy for me to maintain my site. They even provide a java-based web-launching ssh terminal that I can use to work on my site from a friend’s windows machine! Why doesn’t windows come with ssh these days? Maybe because not enough of their users need it. They have graphical administration interfaces to just about anything you could want to do with your webserver. They also have a lot of built in tools such as a shooping cart. My guess is that they’ve established partnerships with people who provide commonly needed e-commerce software. It looks like it would be pretty easy to set myself up as an etailer. I’m going to try it first for my father who plans to build Adirondack chairs. I’m hoping that learning how to do it once will make it all the easier to do it a second time, and maybe I could turn that skill into a profitable one.

Running e-commerce sites has gotten easier, but I’d venture that attracting attention to a website has become a bit more difficult these days. I’d say that there’s no one to learn it from either, but rather it involves having a great knowledge of what websites are hot, and how to get your products placed there.

“Managing Spatial Data with ArcGIS 9.2″

Friday, August 19th, 2005

This Issues also describes the latest version of ArcGIS. They have made some huge advancements in terms of versioning. It sounds like their software is able to keep data in separate locations concurrent through the use of a versioning system similar to CVS. This is built in however, and allows workers to edit projects at different locations at the same time. Nice!

Cover Story: “New Version of ArcWeb Services Allows Users to Customize Services”

Friday, August 19th, 2005

As an example of the latest developer tool, ArcWeb Services 2005 just came out in July and allows users to access data from ESRI’s database, and will soon include data from NAVTEQ Street and Point of Interest, infoUSA Business Data, Sprint Location Services, CustomWeather, EarthSat, and Digital Envoy. These parnters will provide satellite imagery, phone location, street maps, and more to developers. I can’t wait to check it out. Apparently there is a free trial available at www.esri.com/arcweb, or you can call 800 447 9778.

Today I’ve done a little browsing around GML (the geographic markup language)and JP2 (JPEG 2000). My understanding is that the new jpeg file format standard will allow for the inclusion of XML data and that GML is a standard based on XML designed to provide geographic information. So by combining JPEG & GML you will have images with associated geographic data based on a standard!

Wow!

This is great for the emerging industry, Location Based Services. I think that it won’t be long before new component is added to websearching, Location. I think that in the next couple years we will see searching like google’s Local Search become far more common place and widely adopted. Why? Because mobile devices bring more importance to location for the user experience.
