Continuing onward

Thursday, August 31st, 2006

Today I’m looking at the courses offered at the New York institute of
finance. There’s a lot there, and I think I’m most interested in
trading and technical analysis. There are several other interesting
courses there as well such as portfolio management, mergers and
acquisitions, and project finance. These topics are all new for me.
I’m pretty curious about them. There is so much to time but so little
time! How do you choose?

Exuberence

Wednesday, August 30th, 2006

Today I feel inspired! I’ve got a good feeling that things are on the up and up! Work is going well, I talked to two old friends, and I have plans to see family this weekend! It’s all good!

Elliot Wave International financial forecast service

Wednesday, August 30th, 2006

I started my subscription to this service about three weeks ago. Since
then I’ve been using it as the primary advice for my options trading.
However, I did not start fresh with the newsletter. I was in the middle
of a trade gone wrong when I read my first subscription. I had bought
into QQQUJ options (September 36 puts) around the 24th and 25th of
July. When I started reading the Elliot Wave International financial
forecast, my position in these options had diminished to about 50%.
Frankly, I was desperately looking for confirmation that even though my
intial move into QQQUJ was wrong, riding it out from 50% back past my
initial entry point would be a good idea.
So I signed up for the forecast service and felt relieved after finding
aspects of the first update I read which confirmed my play to the
downside. They gave no advice about options however, and that was my
own choice. So far, a bad play. I think that my primary failure was
gaugung the timeframe, and also jumping in ahead of the clear signals.
I’ve been mucking about with QQQUJ. I added to the position as it
decreased to 45%, then sold off some when it returned to 75%, then sold
out of it at 45%, bought back in again and again, and now I’ve lost
count. As is stands now, the position I’ve built there is worthless.
The first Friday of september is fast approaching and I may have to take
a complete loss.
I need to work on my ability to time the market. I think that the
forecast I was reading was for a much longer time frame, 2-6 months,
than I was trading, 2-6 days.

Ashtanga session 4 coming up tonight

Tuesday, August 29th, 2006

Tonight Kitty and I will be attending our fourth ashtanga session. We
are both really enjoying this new method of exercise. It is quite
relaxing, but also strenuous and exhausting. To me, ashtanga requires
even more mental focus than distance running. In running one of the
most important factors in keeping yourself going is your mind. You have
to will yourself to push a little harder, to run a little faster. After
several training runs you find yourself already improved in your ability
to keep on going.
The same thing seems to be happening for me with ashtanga as well. The
first time I was in class, three weeks ago, I was surprised and amazwed
by what the advanced students could do. Actually, I still am amazed,
but bit by bit I am becoming more flexible, stronger, and better
balanced.
Today, an instructor at the Satsang studio in Westfield told me to think
of my yoga practice in terms of decades. That made me laugh, but I
think it’s a good idea.

Fidelity Traders Summit 2006

Tuesday, August 29th, 2006

I just received an invitation to the Fidelity Trader’s Summit 2006 in
Gotham hall, Tuesday October 24th. It’s a day long event full of
seminars and a keynote by Jim Cramer. I cant’ wait for this!! What a
day! There will be seminars on technical analysis and options
strategies I am syure to learn a lot out there, and hopefully I will
make acquaintences with similar interests. In addition to the trading
education I’d love to meet some other people interested in financial
markets analysis, especially those who are currently creating their own
analysis content on the web. I am so excited!

BBQ

Monday, June 12th, 2006

Man, there’s really something about a BBQ that sets my soul at peace.
Is this an evolved instinctual reaction from my neanderthal ancestors?
Perhaps…
BBQing is a great tradition that I’ve enjoyed many times over the years
with friends and family. It’s one of the best ways to cook, especially
when it involves sittin around, talking, and slowly turning the food
from side to side.
Tonite our meal is untraditional in my BBQ experience. In addition to
corn on the cob and burgers will be grilling portobello mushrooms which
have been marinating in olive oil, balsamic vinagrette, and garlic.
Yum! I can’t wait to try them!

Spring in Battery

Wednesday, April 19th, 2006

It’s defintely springtime now!! Today the sun was shining bright
through a cloudless sky. I rolled up my sleves as soon as we got to our
bench. The funny thing was that I saw another group of four young
professionals sitting on a bench, just like us. It’s not like we were
weareing matching shirts, but we dressed similarly enough that we could
have been working in the same kind of office. We looked almost exactly
the same, except my friends and I looked a bit cooler.
It’s not too often that we are reveled to ourselves. I think it takes
true self awareness to recognize your own traits in someone else.
Noticing your habits or stlye in someone is easy and superficial, but I
think realizing that you may think in similar ways about similar
circumstances takes some attention. For me, realizing similarities
between myself and others helps me empathize with them. It makes me
able to show more compassion and understanding.

Back to work

Tuesday, April 18th, 2006

It’s another crowded day on the train. I’m starting my week on Tuesday
after having a relaxing Monday off. I really got to chill out. It was
so nice. The sun was warm as I stood on the front lawn playing my
guitar. I worked through a chord progression that I used to know very
well. When I started trying to remember it I only knew three of the
five chords. I kept at it and eventually they all came back to me. I
can’t quite remeber their names. I think it went E, G, A, C, A and
repeat. That could be part of “Wading In The Velvet Sea” by Phish.
Today it’s back to the city, which is not so relaxing as playing the
guitar in the sun. It is exciting though. I’m interested to see what
happened with the projects I left last week. This should be a hectic
morning. Or should I say interesting? I think I would like it to be
more interesting than hectic, but I haven’t gotten my head to that place
yet.

Spring

Thursday, April 13th, 2006

Spring is finally here!! Flowers are bursting into bloom all over the
place. Here are some daffodills (?) from the backyard. I think the
warm weather is finally here to stay. I even opened the window this
morning.

Best friends

Thursday, April 13th, 2006

Everyone needs a best friend. Maybe a couple. Why not three or four?
Laura is an excellent friend to Kitty and I. She and Kitty have some
great history. She’s a great bargain hunter and bunny keeper. She’s
always looking out for Kitty too. I’ve been told recently that if I
speak disrespectfully to Kitty I’ll be catching a face full of frying
pan. That’s love, and that’s why I like Laura.
