New park - part 2

Wednesday, June 14th, 2006

This is a shot from within the newly finished park at church and dey
street, next to WTC. It’s really nice, having smooth stone surfaces
everywhere and dozens of young honey locust trees. It almost feels
natural. It’s a nice break from the huge skyscaper scenery. The funny
part is that there still isn’t any grass. Stone is more durable
though.

New park across from WTC

Tuesday, June 13th, 2006

There’s a new park that just opened up across the street from WTC. It
seems appropriate for its location. The majority of the benches and
tables are made from some sort of fine marble or other polished stones.
There are some beautiful honey locust trees as well. One mof the best
parts could be this bronze statue of a businessman with a briefcase.
He’s an immortalized vision on the usual suspect in this part of town.

Feel the earth

“Feel The Earth”
That’s really funny. The slogan just strikes me as comical. Here in
NYC they have to advertise the opportunity to actually touch the dirt.
There isn’t enough of it around. All the dirt has been paved over with
asphalt or cobblestone. Of course there’s central park, but I don’t
think people can go there to start their own garden.
Feeling the earth was a daily occurence in my childhood. I walked
through the woods on my way to school each morning. Most days I was
outside digging holes which later became mud pits. Playing in the dirt,
grass, and trees was my thing as a kid. It’s a shock to see it is a
rarity somewhere else.

Amazing driving machine

Okay, so these cars do cost a lot of money, but is it immoral to buy
such a nice thing for yourself? Under any circumstances? Is it
possible that you can do enough good for the world in order to earn the
right to be so self indulgent? What do you think?

Street Musicians

Friday, June 2nd, 2006

This is a wind chamber ensemble getting ready to play on a plaza near my
office building. I heard them play for about 30 seconds. I would have
stayed longer, but we had already taken our full lunch. It was enough
for me just to se these people sitting there getting ready to play.
What a city new york is!! I’m used to seeing street musicians in the
subway with guitars, saxophones, or a bucket drum set. This was really
classy though. They had oboes and clarients. Wow. Sometimes I’m just
amazed.

Birdhouse

What a darling little birdhouse. We saw this on our walk in Brooklyn
Heights. It’s a really charming place. It seems quite family
friendly.

Brooklyn Heights

Wednesday, April 26th, 2006

We took a stroll in Brooklyn Heights last weekend. What a nice
neighborhood. It really felt like a quiet town. I would have believed
that we were in Boston with all the Brownstones around. Surprisngly
there was hardly any traffic noise. Most of the people we saw walking
were either couples or families with young children. This made the
neighborhood as a whole seem family oriented. We walked past three or
four playgrounds full of toddlers.
There were many shops and restaurants within walking distance as well.
Convienence and quiet. That all comes at a cost, however. The real
estate prices are quite expensive. Small apartments start at $600,000
to $700,000.

Here I am with an out of towner I just happene to meet at the pier. We
got to talking and she really wanted a picture with me. She didn’t have
a camera so we took one with mine. I asked a local yokel to take it for
us. This is just before ihe ran off with the camera.
We look so happy in that moment, so innocent.
